Hays Senior Center – August 2025 Workdays

A Summer of Success for Our Hays Gardeners, Work days 8/13 & 8/27.

The Hays Senior Center gardens are looking magnificent, all thanks to the incredible dedication and hard work of our amazing volunteers! Through heat waves and beautiful fall days, these green-thumbed heroes have descended upon the gardens to tackle every challenge Mother Nature has thrown their way.

On a warm and humid day in mid-August, our “mighty Hays gardeners” Scott, Pat, Kay, Rochelle, Bea, Kuganes, Sue, Carol, and Dick braved the elements to restore beauty to the center. They fought back weeds, addressed sun-scorched plants, and even rescued our custom native/pollinator sign after it was mysteriously pulled up. The team also took on some big-picture thinking, discussing plans to replace the troublesome mulberry shrubs and the rose bush in the native bed. A huge thank you to Kuganes, who even offered to donate some asters from her own yard to help with the fall planting!

Two weeks later, on a beautiful, fall-like day at the end of August, a new crew was on the scene. Pat, Kay, Scott, Barbara, Sue, Dick, Suni, and Ken enjoyed the pleasant weather while continuing the work. It was great to have Suni back with us! The team turned into plant detectives, diagnosing and treating the bobo hydrangea for anthracnose and the nandina shrubs for black scale. They also performed a rescue mission on flattened plants and a heroic effort to secure the native/pollinator bed sign once and for all with more concrete. And, with a special shout-out to Sue, she “planted” the long-awaited new plant labels that finally arrived!

Thanks to the tireless work of all our volunteers, the gardens are looking better than ever. Their commitment ensures the Hays Senior Center remains a beautiful and welcoming place for everyone. The next workday is Wednesday, September 10th, so come join the fun! A huge round of applause for all of our volunteers, you truly make the Hays Center shine!
